Comment(by dsd):

 Understanding the following quirks of ALSA would likely help us
 significantly:

  * why the PCM mixer only appears sometimes
  * why the Digital mixer only appears sometimes
  * what the Digital mixer actually is (if it's a switch between digital
 and analog input, shouldnt we put it on 0% because we're using an analog
 mic??)
