 this works on XO-1 by the inclusion of a "use-serial" line to the
 activity/permissions.info file, which was added for this use case. see
 #834 and
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activity_bundles#activity.2Fpermissions.info

 on 1.5, i'm surprised there's an issue.  the /dev/ttyUSB0 device is owned
 by group 'dialout', and olpc is a member of that group.  permissions are
 660.

 what release is john running?
