 The problem symptoms disappeared after I applied the
 http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/10070#comment:13 fix (rm
 /home/olpc/Activities/Record.activity/gst/linux32/*).

 Ticket #10101 ought to be closed once the Record Activity is updated to
 remove the broken gstreamer binaries currently included in that Activity
 bundle.
