 I wonder if the automatic wakeups could be battery state of charge change
 events?

 The ticket doesn't mention the power source.

 The system usually auto-wakes on the first suspend.  That is because there
 is a pending PS/2 event in the mouse queue, resulting from the touchpad
 controller having reported that it came alive.  You can suppress that by
 typing "select /mouse unselect" before the first suspend.
