Comment(by sayamindu):

 After installing pulseaudio, pulseaudio-module-x11 and alsa-plugins-
 pulseaudio

 Playback:
 In GNOME I could play a ogg audiofile with Totem. GNOME startup sound
 worked as well. In Sugar, both Browse and JukeBox activities could play
 the ogg file. Scratch had issues (because of
 http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=7328), though Etoys worked well (I
 think using padsp, etc). I think the Scratch folks have a pulseaudio
 plugin for SqueakVM. TamTamMini's sound was lagging and crackled a lot.

 Recording:
 None worked, except for GNOME Sound Recorder (which recorded some static
 in the first attempt and became unresponsive during the second attempt)
