 Yeah, we lost the applet when we made the decision to remove pulseaudio.

 I'd be interested in knowing how sound compares if pulseaudio is installed
 and turned on these days; last time I think we just weren't getting any
 audio output at all with pulse, and couldn't immediately figure out why.
