 both dsd and i have heard soft chirping from the 1.5 laptop when using USB
 storage devices.  it's periodic -- about once a second.  i'm using one of
 the 1G Belkin sticks that we have a bunch of.
 (this is at the OS level -- haven't tried with OFW)

 i just unmounted, unplugged, replugged.  i got a single chirp on insert,
 then nothing until the device had been fully discovered.  and now the
 chirps are about two seconds apart.

 dsd also thinks he's heard stuff with usb-ethernet adapter
