Comment:

 More data:

 In the hang case, the screen continues to show the XO startup animation
 final state just before switching to the X screen.

 You can prevent the hang by switching to a different VT prior to "telinit
 5".  In that case, the screen shows a login prompt in a VT before
 switching to the X display.

 Apparently, something that viafb does during the VT switch prevents the
 later hang.

 I wonder if this problem could be somehow related to the longstanding
 problem that the startup animation background is messed up?

 All of the above tests are with os31.

 I'm provisionally assigning this to the "kernel" component just so it's
 not in limbo.  It could be yet another OFW driver setup problem, or
 perhaps a viafb problem.
