Comment(by pgf):

 playing with wad's machine ("C1 prebuild #2"), with wireless card removed,
 i'm seeing, no correlation with rtcwake timer enabled or not.

 my testing has been with automatic power management enabled. i'm seeing a
 correlation with how long the laptop has been asleep. if keyboard
 activity happens within about 2 minutes of last activity, then the laptop
 wakes just fine. if keyboard activity happens after 3 or 4 minutes of
 last activity, then it's unlikely it will wake up. (i did see it wake
 once after 4.5 minutes, but usually it won't after 3.)

 "echo 9 > /proc/sys/kernel/prink" prevents the lockup, reliably.

 symptom of lockup is "+r" and nothing more on serial.
