Comment(by pgf):

 built a new kernel, enabling CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB_LEAK and
 CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK.  kmemleak doesn't report any leaks.  presumably
 this means someone is still holding a pointer to all the 110+K blocks?
