 The power button press was not included in my earlier reply.  Restating
 the events:
  * "wait for dim screen and idle suspend then wake with touchpad" was done
 11 times on the four laptops,
  * the laptops were then allowed to idle suspend, then wake themselves to
 turn off their backlights,
  * the laptops were turned back on using a power button,
  * "wait for dim screen and idle suspend then wake with touchpad"
 sequences were repeated,
  * on the second sequence, one unit exhibited the symptom.

 Since then, a further 25 cycles of the "wait for dim screen and idle
 suspend then wake with touchpad" sequence have been used, on the four
 laptops.  So the symptom has happened at a frequency of one in 144
 attempts.
