 examining the file os56.2g.zd that i tried shows that it's the result of
 zhashfs'ing a compressed .img file, rather than the .img file itself.

 after extracting the true contents, and uncompressing, and re-zhashfs'ing,
 it was too big to be fs-updated onto either of the sandisk 2g cards i have
 handy.  one is a full-size sandisk III extreme, weighing in at 1985024
 blocks (according to /proc/partitions), and the other is an "official"
 sandisk 2gb micro-sd that i got from gary chiang, which shows 1931264
 blocks.
