 We are calling setsysfont in the end of pretty boot, but our LANG is set
 to C (not 'C.utf8') and so unicode_start is not being invoked.

 We should invoke:
 {{{
 unicode_start sun12x22
 }}}
 at the last stage of pretty boot (and ensure this is run even if we're not
 pretty booting).
