 ah.  got it.

 stop X completely, via "init 3".  ohmd will quickly chew up all of its
 file descriptors.

 (because i run XFCE, and have a custom .xsession file, X won't run after
 an olpc-update until i've done a yum install of several key packages.  so
 i always use "init 3" for many minutes immediately after an upgrade.)
