Comment:

 Adding the line
 memory-limit to linux-memtop
 to the olpc.fth as you directed does indeed solve the problem of the lock-
 up.

 Now it appears to boot without locking up, EVERY time! Much improved!

 Also, at first glance, it also appears to make the whole distro load
 faster than before? Could that be a side-effect? Unexpected bonus!

 As a note, I was NOT using ext3 on any of the storage I tested with, I
 used ext2 only, as you recommend.
