Comment(by Progman3K):

 Both booting off of a USB key (/dev/sda1) and booting off of a SD card
 (/dev/mmcblk0p1) exhibit this problem.

 It is possible the kernel is in fact wedging, but it worked before the
 upgrade, albeit not every boot. I found that NOT plugging in any USB mouse
 or keyboard would reduce the frequency of the problem.

 My unit (a G1G1) has a stuck-key, so I have been using an external
 keyboard basically since I started working with it.

 The kernel can be downloaded from www.gentooxo.org/download.shtml but the
 package is quite big, so I will attach the minimum files required to this
 ticket.

 I am using an initramfs, everything is contained in the kernel file, there
 is no secondary initrd file.
