 Hi, I was running a Gentoo distro from a USB key on my OLPC There was
 often a problem at boot; the machine would power up and Openfirmware would
 lock up just before loading the kernel.

 I would get the following lines:

 Type the esc key... Boot device: /sd/disk:\boot\kernel-2.6.26-gentoo-r1
 Arguments: ro root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 rootwait noapic console=ttyS0,115200
 console=tty0 fbcon=font:SUN12x22

 And OpenFirmware would hang 5 times out of 6

 I would power-off the unit, then power-on again and it would eventually
 boot the kernel off the usb key after 5-6 tries.

 After updating OpenFirmware from q2d07 to q2e19, the problem has gotten
 MUCH WORSE OpenFirmware now locks up at EVERY boot and will not boot no
 matter how many times I cycle the power if there is either a USB key or
 flashcard plugged in.

 The nand-installed OS (Fedora/Sugar) will still boot if I power-off and
 remove the USB Key
