 my "user experience" in that test was that the delay in character echo was
 a result of "lengthy" (many lines of text) incoming messages from other
 chat clients.  i.e., it felt like the program was single-threaded, and
 that receiving or displaying the received text was preventing my own text
 from being displayed.  (this is just how it felt -- i have no idea what
 the underlying cause might have been.
