 i asked wad about this, and he suspects that this batch of laptops (which
 is pre-production, in some sense) may well have been handled and re-
 installed manually.  in particular, it's entirely that the config file was
 recreated by hand in order to force a new name and color choice on first
 boot.  and if they did that incorrectly, as root, it could certainly have
 caused these symptoms.
