 I learned that doing
 {{{
 # more /var/log/lastlog
 }}}
 in a console, or
 {{{
 $ sudo more /var/log/lastlog
 }}}
 in Terminal, will mess up the display character set.  Typing the command
 {{{
 reset
 }}}
 will restore it back to normal.   This was learned by trial-and-error.

 So typing
 {{{
 more /var/log/*
 }}}
 is not a good idea.
