Comment(by Eben):
I think we need some more feedback on the use cases, personally. My
initial inclination was that handheld mode would be entered within the
context of a specific activity which took advantage of its benefits, and
not that it would provide a parallel full-featured means of operating the
entire Sugar UI. I think that the questions:
A. Can I switch among running activities?
B. Can I open new activities?
C. Can I interact with Home/Group/Neighborhood views?
D. Can I interact with the Frame?
all need to be answered independently, and will have an effect on how we
choose to use the buttons available. I initially answered no to all of
these.
I think (referring to the previous comment now) (1a) is a good idea
assuming that (B) and (C) are answered "no". I think that (1c) is
reasonable if (B) and (C) are answered "yes". I think that The alternate
(1b) (the overlay) is the better way to go, assuming that (B) and (C) are
answered "no", but that this also complicates the simple action of
rotating the screen as well, which I'm dissatisfied with.
But in the end, I still might prefer keeping things simple and answering
"no" to (B), (C), and (D), and perhaps "yes" to (A) assuming we can find a
reasonable way to make the activity switch happen. We have an intern
doing research on potential use cases and input mappings for handheld
mode, and I think we should wait until that comes further along before
finalizing any of these decisions.
