 I do think that (1) is truly desirable.  The fact remains that, in order
 to use the cursor in handheld mode, an activity has to explicitly write
 code to handle that form of input.  As such, I'd expect any activity that
 wishes to do so to also explicitly ask, in some fashion, to make the
 cursor visible.

 I don't have input on whether or not this should be done in the shell or
 the activity class; whatever makes the API cleaner.
