Comment(by daf):

 Ben and I managed to catch a trace of an invitation not working today. It
 looks like the invited XO sees the ARP request from the inviting XO and
 replies to it, but doesn't see any of the three TCP syn packets that
 follow.

 Ben reports that the icon for the inviting XO moves on the mesh view of
 the invited XO, which is interesting. Perhaps some mdns information
 changes which causes an update?

 Attaching traces for further analysis.
