 From the virtual terminal, I wanted to get edubuntu or ubuntu to load. I
 used: olpc-update ubuntu (or edubuntu). It tries 3 different ways to do
 the rsync and fails them all.

 The final error message with the ubuntu update was:

 rsync error: som files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1385)
 [generator=2.6.9].

 No more update methods to try.
