Comment(by daf):

 It's patently not true that this knowledge only exists inside Collabora.
 Multiple people outside Collabora have independently created their own
 connection managers (the Butterfly CM for MSN written in Python comes to
 mind in particular). I agree, however, that our documentation could be
 improved.
