 when you say that, what I hear is, "additional roadblocks for developers
 are okay."  While that may be true for *paid* developers, it's yet another
 thing that will keep external folks from getting involved in development.

 I know for a fact that there are unpaid volunteers who are working on
 things like Debian XO support, and a) booting exclusively off SD or USB so
 as keep a valid install on mtd0, and b) are tracking master kernels.  I
 don't want to discourage them from working on stuff by having an "it's
 okay to gratuitiously break things for developers" attitude.
