Comment(by ssb22):

 If you can get the WINE app to run in a 1.0 version of Wine (e.g. 1.0rc4,
 which you'll need to compile on a fairly high-spec and recent Linux
 machine with kernel 2.6+), then you can change the DPI to anything you
 like by running "wine regedit" and adjusting
 HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Fonts\LogPixels (remember to press the
 "Decimal" radio button unless you want to input it in hex). This will
 make all fonts in all apps as large as you want, apart from apps that do
 their own drawing (like Wenlin) which will need to be persuaded to do it
 larger themselves (unfortunately the Wenlin largest size is not so large
 at 200dpi, but it may be OK for users with eyesight that's not as bad as
 mine).

 If this method of zooming is sufficient in your case then you can avoid
 having to do it with the three VNC-related programs discussed earlier in
 this ticket, which saves memory and CPU.

 For a single non-networked session, it is possible to save a little more
 memory by stopping unnecessary processes such as sshd crond anacron
 NetworkManager
