Comment(by marco):

 Status meeting agreement is that we should do this and the related #7589
 even if we can't do it in a way that cover all cases. Think of the
 "reserving" 50 MB space idea, for example.

 Some combination of Tomeu, Marco, Eben, Simon should discuss a simple
 design for this in 8.2, and we can refine it later.
