 in the simple case this code will process the command in a single pass of
 the EC processing loop.

 This definitely made things worse in terms of triggering the lockups with
 the ping test. I can suspend/resume just fine with wakeup-by-touchpad but
 if I am pinging the system when I suspend, I hit the lockup within one
 cycle with the default 20ms timeout. With 40ms timeout things work, but
 still hitting the lockup.
