> Is there any way to learn *nix without the man pages? Sure, there's the
internet, but isn't it the case that the internet not *not* supposed to be
a requirment for laptop distribution (given the fact that internet access
cannot be relied upon per se)?
It's not just the *nix stuff of sections 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Sections 2 and
3 are seriously important as a programming reference.
> Buying a book is another way to learn, but that's not an option here.
Wish: "UNIX for the Impatient". I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask about
permission to distribute it. (While targeting beginners, that book doesn't
leave important things out. It has both examples and explanations of the
concepts.)
> At *minimum* a subset of the man pages should be included out of the
box, not just the ability to download it from the internet. Better yet, a
local translation should be included. (Has anyone actually translated any
of the man pages?)
Man pages are commonly translated. The more critical ones are more
widely/recently/accurately translated, and of course some languages
(generally of Europe, East Asia, Russia) fare better than others.
Untranslated pages are still of value, even if one does not know anybody
who can read English. The formal style allows a user to determine syntax.
