 Replying to [ticket:5992 IainDavidson]:

 > Workaround, during bootup Ctrl-Alt-F1 will show console window, able to
login as root. If screen fills with error messages, hit C-A-F1 again. Type
'init 3' to stop messages and rebooting process. Then fix problem by
 restoring the /home/olpc directory.

This doesn't look easy at all. The X server needs to stop this restarting
 nonsense.

 > Possible solution, check for existence of /home/olpc before writing or
reading configuration files. Restore to default settings at 1st boot.

Assuming that a UNIX expert is unavailable, the solution is to reinstall.

Adding hacks to fix every possible problem is no good. There is no end to
the number of possible problems which can be caused by hardware trouble
 and little hackers.
