 Attempting to zoom on a USGS topo quad can crash Read, occasionally also
 blowing up other open Activities (including Journal(!)).

 Recreate by loading attached PDF - zoom to 250% or greater.  This is
 coming off a USB drive on my system, but I'll assume that's not relevant.

 Looking at top on the root console in the moments before crash - it does
 not appear to be exhausting RAM - though it is consuming >20% of it during
 (what I assume is) re-rendering/caching.
