Comment(by Phil):

 A note that I used this patch on my XO running 650 and it seemed to behave
 as expected; I could launch internal programs, and could enter subshells,
 and it did not exit out until I typed 'exit' or hit Ctrl-D in the first
 ("topmost") shell.
