 There is no need to be "smart" about this.

 Developers can use "telinit 3" to take down the GUI, and "telinit 5" to
 bring it back up again. This works from the Linux console, from ssh, and
 from the Terminal activity.

 Being locked out of the machine is EXTREMELY SERIOUS, particularly on a
 secure machine. It's simply not worth risking this for some lazy Alt-Ctrl-
 Backspace habit. Being "smart" here is actually being dumb. On a GUI
 failure, which ideally should never happen but certainly will, the laptop
 must go to the console. This allows the laptop to be fixed. (kids will and
 should try power cycling it first of course)
