Given that the act of saving updates to files is obscured/automated by the
datastore/Journal system, if a user makes mistakes in the file she is
editing, is it possible to go back to a version of that file before she
started editing? Or if a user knows that she wants to preserve the
document's changes-so-far as a separate object, preserving the original as
well, is that possible? If opening a file and editing it causes the only
preserved copy to be updated, does that limit the control that a user has
 over her files?

How can a user treat a file as both immutable and as the basis of further
work (i.e. to use it as a template)?
