There can be no "in case". Putting an index on a USB stick is BROKEN.
I suppose there is a quick fix:
1. When mounting, immediately delete any index. (the index can not be
trusted)
2. When unmounting, delete the index. (the index will never be used again)
There is still the problem of large/full/readonly media, but at least the
security/correctness problems go away. Backwards compatibility is no
longer a problem.

I think that Gnu's "crap file" term is truly excellent and insightful. It
fits in many ways.
