Comment:

Was now able to get 'olpc-update' working from the text console (alt-
ctl-F2) on another XO. So I'll assume I made a typographical mistake when
setting up the root session in the text console, and that this mistake is
 what caused my problem.

 --------

The network being down was completely implausible to me. I used the
network right before issuing the first 'olpc-update', and I used the
network right after the first 'olpc-update' had failed.

Please note that my internet connection is through a proxy. For that
reason, I cannot use the graphical update in Control Panel -- I have no
easy means to indicate the presence of the proxy to the Control Panel
session. In Terminal, I manually set environmental variable RSYNC_PROXY
before attempting updates. I also did the same manual setup of
RSYNC_PROXY in the text console before issuing the update command. There
must have been a typo, for the update to not have found the proxy. But
the network interface was not down when I issued the command.
