Comment(by riccardo):

Timed again with different probe points:
`start' when the shell enters main
`end' on the first expose event in the home window

 Timings:
 --- old code ---
 (rebooted xo)
 1. 7.62
 2. 7.69
 3. 8.21
 4. 8.3
 5. 8.24

 --- patch applied ---
 (rebooted xo)
 1. 7.58
 2. 8.08
 3. 8.08
 4. 7.54
 5. 7.56

There must be some cause making timings oscillate between ~7.6s and ~8.2s.
 Patched version is *slightly* faster.
