Comment:

 It is unexpected that Gabble would start and stop so fast. A log might
 reveal more information.

 There's no need to poll for status: you can use D-Bus signals to find out
 what's going on. The NameOwnerChanged signals will tell you when a
 connection manager starts or stops; the StatusChanged signal will tell you
 when they start and stop trying to connect and when they succeed. This
 would likely be more reliable than polling and use less battery into the
 bargain.

 If you think this would be useful we could add a script that does this to
 olpc-netutils.
