Comment:

Well, let's start with information about your network. How are you
getting your network access: DSL, Cablemodem, dialup, something else?
From what provider, in what area of the country? Have you tried taking
your XO to another environment (friend's house, coffeeshop) and does this
allow olpc-update to work? If you're using wired ethernet, what type of
adapter are you using. If you're using wireless, what model of access
point are you using, and how is it configured (open access, WEP, WPA, WPA2
 encryption, 802.11a, b, or g)?

All indications are that your local network is broken. Information about
how it is broken and whether this brokenness are widespread enough to
justify workarounds on our side are necessary to make any progress on this
bug. (Note that forcing mtu to 1492 will break other networks which
properly set the MTU, so we can't do this for all users.)

 See http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7801 and
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/695 for more information about MTU. You
should be able to set the MTU on your wireless access point (for example)
which will fix all applications on your network, not just olpc-update.
