Comment:

 This is actually working just fine, I confirmed in a private email w Kim &
 Brian. You have to - as olpc

 ssh -i .sugar/default/owner.key SERIALNUM at schoolserver

 replace SERIALNUM with the serial number of the machine, in uppercase. The
 backup procedure uses this internally, so I can confirm that it is
 working.
