Comment:

 After a bit of research on this, the following tools seem to fit the bill

  - ivman - a genering DBus event handler. Upside: it seems to be
 moderately popular, generic hooks to trigger scripts on dbus events.
 Downsides: unmaintained, bad config syntax.

  - hal-autofs - python listener. simple, we can probable even make it work
 and adapt to our evil means.

  - a udev + autofs script as per http://gentoo-
 wiki.com/HOWTO_Auto_mount_filesystems_(AUTOFS)#System_Setup_and_Configuration
