 Hmm - I saw the error dialog about another process using the snd device. I
 had one shot wher it worked on the XO - it took quite a long time until
 the sound was played when I hovered over the buttons but it did. The other
 tries it did not work.

 lsof is showing that the totem-plugin is using the device. Maybe it tries
 to start several plugins or something like that, not sure yet.
