 I think ssb22 hit two other problems:

 1. Age 50 to 60 tends to need MUCH more light, especially blue light. The
 XO display is rather dim even with the backlight on.

 2. The XO display does not have a wide viewing angle. When I look at it
 from an angle, I sometimes see brightness inversions. (dark things appear
 lighter than light things) This is especially true with the backlight off,
 but can even happen with the backlight on. You really need to sit in front
 of the display to be using it.

 I suspect the main thing in favor of a large font would also be satisfied
 by narrow columns or double-spaced lines. Kids seem to have trouble going
 to the next line correctly.

 BTW, which fonts do you think are too small? (rollovers, word processor
 default, typical web pages...)
