 The backlight is way brighter than necessary for use in a pitch black room
 (eg. at night).

 If possible for Gen 1 lower the minimum brightness.

 Also what about allowing light leakage from the power LED into the screen
 - that would probably provide just about enough illumination on the screen
 to read with the backlight off at night.

 Otherwise, for gen 2:

 Have a single white LED behind the screen (and maybe an extra diffuser).
 This will allow the system to be used in dark environments while saving
 considerable amounts of power.  For when more light is needed, the ccfl
 backlight can be used.
