 I just tried that link in a fresh install of Build 597, and indeed it
 played silence, the problem being that the volume control (the broken file
 icon) was set to mute. Clicking, and moving its slider up worked.

 Perhaps the XO is booting with some Alsa volume levels set to mute, either
 Master or PCM, and TamTam unmutes them, explaining why it works if the
 audio file is played afterwards.
