 Here is what happened today:
 1. I turned on the machine and waited for it to load.  (there was no usb
 or sd card plugged in)
 2. After the journal icon stopped flashing I clicked on it
 3. The search bar and activity/time selectors were at the top but
 everything below that was white.  (no scrollbar)
 4. I restarted X with ctrl+alt+erase
 5. Clicked on the journal after it stopped flashing
 6. The scrollbar and items were back
 7. I clicked a item to test if it would go to the page and it did
 8. I clicked back and it went back after two or three minutes (very slow)
 9. I restarted X again
 10.  I opened the journal.  It was light grey with a darker grey box in
 the top left corner underlined with a uneven black line.
 11. After 10 seconds that disappeared to the white page described above
 but with the scrollbar
 12. Ten seconds later it went to a weird journal.  This consisted of a
 white page with stars on the sides.  And one entry at the bottom.  I took
 a screen shot of it
 13. 30 seconds later that disappeared and the normal journal appeared
 14. I clicked on the screenshot and opened it in browse
 15. I put a usb stick in
 16. I clicked the back button in the journal.
 17. Four minutes later it returned to the journal.  It had the white page
 with a scroll bar and the usb picture at the bottom.
 18. I meant to click on the usb but the cursor flicked up and I
 accidentally clicked on some white.
 19. A journal item loaded
 20. I pressed back and it quickly went back to the journal with all the
 items returned
 21. I clicked on the usb icon and it went to the proper page after around
 ten seconds
 22. I pressed unmount on the usb stick in the journal
 23. After 20 seconds of a grey journal, the items returned

 In answer to your questions.  The journal usually loads up with a white
 page, no scrollbar.  Though it sometimes loads properly.  Restarting X
 often makes the journal work again though around 60% of the time it
 remains broken.
