 Dan's suggestions makes sense to me.  The activity ring is supposed to
 serve as the visual indication for the child that there is no remaining
 room.  In our early designs, we actually had activity rollovers which
 overlaid a wedge of the appropriate size in the ring to indicate how much
 space an activity would consume once started.  Obviously in order to do
 that you have to make some assumptions and consider the average case.

 Even without the explicit visual indicator, having a rough idea of how
 much an activity consumes seems smart.
