Comment(by corbet):

 The "out of memory" message would appear to be the real clue here.  The
 driver must be able to allocate at least two contiguous buffers for DMA or
 it will not be able to function.  That allocation *should* be done at boot
 time if the driver is still configured correctly; I guess it's time to get
 a current build and see what's up.
