 Offering a non-modal alert sounds reasonable.  What could it really offer
 you though?  Would it simply say "The activity could not stop cleanly.
 Data may have been lost."?  Will it allow you to cancel the "stop"
 operation and continue working if you want?  I'm not really sure the cases
 where this might come up.  Perhaps a simple notification of the problem
 with no means of resolution (as, for instance, in the Read case there is
 none) is enough...
